Mission

We will serve our students, the accounting profession, academia and other stakeholders through nationally recognized leadership in research, teaching, and public service.

We will provide meaningful learning experiences that engage the highest quality faculty and students in all aspects of scholarship and innovative uses of technology.

Strategic Details

The Strategic Plan of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems consists of five areas of focus:

1. People: To provide adequate support for recruiting and retaining faculty, academic staff and graduate students, including individuals from diverse backgrounds, capable of contributing to the Department's research, teaching and service missions.

2. Research: To foster an active research community, particularly through research workshops, where faculty, academic staff and graduate students freely and readily exchange ideas in the generation of new knowledge.

3. Instruction: To continually evaluate and improve curriculum design and course delivery in the light of ongoing technological and professional change, with particular emphasis on opportunities to integrate coursework in accounting and related disciplines.

4. External Relations: To build and maintain strong relationships with alumni, external donors, and current and prospective students and continually expand employment opportunities for departmental program graduates.

5. Internal Operations: To streamline faculty governance (committee structures) within the Department and develop efficiency and transparency in the allocation of resources to foster full faculty productivity and camaraderie.

The Strategic Planning Process

The continued suitability of articulated strategic plans and the success of departmental efforts in achieving these plans are evaluated in annual departmental faculty discussions each fall and in semi-annual meetings of our (External) Advisory Board, which consists of top professional accounting personnel in organizations with substantial history in hiring our program graduates and alumni with demonstrated sustained interest in Departmental success.

Honors

The accounting faculty has earned national recognition, with a special strength in teaching. Jerry Weygandt received the WICPA Lifetime Achievement in Accounting Education Award in 1995 and Bill Stevenson in 1996. R. D. Nair, Larry Rittenberg and Jerry Weygandt have all received WICPA's Outstanding Educator Award, and Jerry Weygandt was recognized with the Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in 1992. Our upper level courses are taught by faculty, many of whom have written best-selling textbooks in the area.

Our faculty also have strong professional ties. Many serve on important committees within the American Institute of CPAs, the Wisconsin Institute of CPA's, the Institute of Managerial Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the American Accounting Association. Three of our faculty members have worked directly in the accounting standard setting process and one has worked with AICPA committees on developing concepts to deal with electronic evidence.
