Prime costs are the sum of direct materials and direct labor costs.

Prime\ Costs= Direct \ Material \ Costs + Direct \ Labor \ Costs

Origin

Cost accounting first focussed on direct materials and direct labor costs due to their ease of traceability. Later cost accounting developed techniques for accounting for overhead costs. Manufacturing overhead was accounted for as a period cost. The word "prime" is thought come from the idea of being the first.
