Adjusted gross income (AGI) is a term in the United States taxation to describe the amount used in the calculation of an individual's income tax liability. This includes earned income (wage), passive income (interest & dividends), income from retirement accounts, capital gains, or alimony received. In the United States federal tax system, it is defined as income after certain adjustments are made (e.g. contributions to (deductible) retirement accounts, alimony paid by you), but before standardized and itemized deductions and personal exemptions are applied.
